Global Awareness

By Caroline - Posted on 22 January 2010

Would you like to develop new skills to take positive actions towards eliminating global poverty, build capacity and acquire skills to question and challenge injustices globally?

CORE will be starting new Global Awareness* groups aiming at promoting knowledge, awareness and understanding of global development issues and poverty reduction agenda amongst North Edinburgh BME communities. Equipping members of these communities with skills to take positive actions/change behaviour towards eliminating global poverty, including changes in their own actions.

Each group will meet weekly over a period of 6 months (the first group will start in mid February 2010 - day and time to be agreed). Group sessions will include discussions, activities, reflection, outings, art work etc.

Please contact us to find out more information about this new project, discuss plans and share any ideas that you may have.

Those who are interested in this group need to complete the attached brief questionnaire. This will help us to organise groups sessions in a manner that suits the majority of our service users.

*The BME ‘Global Awareness’ project, aims to promote knowledge, awareness and understanding of global development issues and poverty reduction agenda amongst North Edinburgh black and minority ethnic (BME) communities. We hope that the project will increase awareness of international development issues (Confidence), explore the UK's Government contribution to the developing world and its current ‘poverty reduction’ strategies (Knowledge), form links between our own experiences and that of other fellow human beings in the developing countries (Links), build capacity and skills to be able to question and challenge injustices globally through disseminating of knowledge (eg by information sharing, campaigns, events, exhibitions, advocacy etc) (Dissemination). Participants will be engage in a reflctive journey leading to changed behaviour in our everyday actions in support of poverty reduction (Action).

Group members will:

1. indentify their current understanding of the International Development Targets (IDT), the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the UK Government's contribution to the developing world and the poverty reduction agenda. This will be done through expressions through art work, discussions amongst participants and regular feedback.

2. Use appropriate and relevant materials and resources and use methods that engage participants in discussions and activities related to IDTs and MDGs to further raise their awareness.

3. Explore how links between their own lives and those of people living in poverty in other countries are inter-related including events related to migration.

4. Groups will be provided with ongoing support to form links with other local groups to use their skills to spread the message of poverty reduction agenda widely.

5. Work with an experienced Art Worker to transfer their ideas, thoughts and experiences into an art project using theme of migration with the goal of producing one panel for each group to put together as a 4 panel display. Groups will plan and organise the launch of their 4 panel Exhibition of their messages to the wider community at an End of Project Launch Event articulating their messages to a wider audience through their work but also verbally speaking about their learning/experiences.
